In February 2022, the European Banking Federation (EBF) brought together senior representatives from leading European banks to generate new insights and exchange ideas on sustainability and climate issues. The newly launched ‘Chief Sustainability Officers Roundtable’ will meet regularly to share best practices and explore collective action to enhance the banking sector’s contribution to the European Union’s sustainable transition.
With the 2030 deadline to reduce greenhouse gas emissions fast approaching, global commitments to fight climate change are rising in number. In the EU, key pieces of sustainable finance legislation are entering into force, while the ‘Fit for 55’ package, intended to facilitate a European Union greenhouse gas emissions cut of 55% by 2030 compared to 1990, unleashes the implementation of wide-ranging industrial changes. Against this backdrop, senior leaders responsible for the execution of the sustainability strategy of European banks of various sizes will share valuable perspectives on delivering real outcomes for a sustainable EU. The closed-door meetings will be complemented by regular engagement with policymakers.
European banks strive to finance a sustainable economy. To underpin the banks’ individual efforts, strong collective action on behalf of the sector is crucial in terms of creating the right regulatory and business environment that enables banks to support their clients’ transition efforts. As the voice of European banks, the EBF aims to ensure the availability of supporting tools enabling banks’ financing of the transition, shape the underlying economic incentives, and accelerate and complement best practices. The EBF coordinates with an extensive network of banking associations and bank experts guided by a strategic group focusing on financing inclusive and sustainable growth.
The European Banking Federation is the voice of the European banking sector, bringing together national banking associations from across Europe. The EBF is committed to a thriving European economy that is underpinned by a stable, secure and inclusive financial ecosystem, and to a flourishing society where financing is available to fund the dreams of citizens, businesses and innovators everywhere.
